Happy New Year! Cheers to 2012 - the Year of the Dragon, which is also the year I was born. I can already feel my luck changing and my artist block lifting. I have a few projects on my plate that I'm really excited to share but for now, here's a detail shot of something I started in 2011 and am currently working on. Can you tell who that is?

Greene & Sunset Lookbook

For this particular assignment, I traded my x-acto in for a brush and it was really fun! I made some loose ink drawings for Greene & Sunset's, a Brooklyn jewelry designer's Lookbook and I really like how they came out! Although, I'm curious to see what a cut paper backdrop would look like...

Before 2010 ended, I managed to squeeze out a couple of illustrations for Amelia's Magazine.

I had a one week deadline for 3 illustrations! It was a frantic week of
cutting paper, working, and shopping for last minute Christmas gifts!

This one was on The Muppets Christmas Music.

For this one, I had to illustrate the first snowstorm.

And this one was of the readers'/illustrators' favorite Christmas Song.

Here's a little peek at my process :)

AD Kristin Rogers Brown from Bitch Magazine contacted me about doing an illustration concerning stay at home daughters. These young women decide to stay at home and take care of the household instead of attending college or pursuing a career. They are extremely religious and they believe that their place as females is to obey their fathers and their husbands. I wanted to focus on this overbearing presence of the male figures on the stay-at-home daughter's life.

Here's my approved sketch.

Since this was for an illustrataon job, the final had to look like the approved sketch. (For personal work, I like to let the paper dictate where I cut.) First, I tiled and printed my original image to create a larger version of my sketch.

Then I taped the sketch to the rice paper so I know where to cut. After all this preliminary stuff, I finally get to cut into the paper!

Along with this full page illustration, I also did a spot for this article.

The Women in Film International Committee

This year's 4th Annual The Women In Film International Committee (WIFI) Shorts Program is celebrating the works of Korean Filmmakers and the illustration promoting this event is my self portrait~of all things!

The film festival is taking place at the Korean Cultural Center in LA on October 2, 2010 from 5-10PM. I wish I could go but New York is very very far away from LA.

"The WIFI Shorts Program is a celebration of filmmakers from all corners of the world, produced by the members of the Women In Film International Committee (WIFI). This year, for the 4th Annual Shorts Program, WIFI has partnered with the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA) and the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) to showcase and celebrate the dynamic works of emerging and established Korean and Korean-American filmmakers."

So, lately I've been busy working, settling down in Brooklyn, and traveling back to the suburbs of Philadelphia for my mom's birthday. The highlight of my trip back home had to be when I visited my grandmother and played some hand games (sseh sseh sseh) with her elderly friend. I was trying so hard to keep up with her. We were prancing in circles and kicking our feet up in the air!

For my mom's birthday, I made an Almond Cherry Red Velvet Torte.

Besides life's happenings, I also designed some new business cards. My old ones just weren't cutting it for me. I ordered them from moo.com and I love how they came out! The paper is nice and thick and perfectly smooth. Now, all I have to do is meet some very important people to hand them out to! Maybe you!

Awhile ago, Old Book Illustrations asked me to do an interview for their Present Tense section where they showcase interviews from present-day illustrators.

My interview is finally up and you can read it here.

In other news, I finally met some Ohger members face to face this past weekend and Robert Zimmerman himself! Even Edel Rodriguez took the time out to attend our first gathering. To say the least, we had some good times! We talked about how illustration has changed, how much drive we need in order to succeed as an illustrator (meaning A LOT), and about our budding careers.

I should really take that advice and I'm going to go make something now!

ICARUS' father Daedalus made two pairs of wax wings: one for him and one for his son. Before they took off, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun but Icarus did not heed his father's warning. (Typical.)
His wings melted and Icarus fell into the Icarian Sea. Poor Icarus!

The left earring depicts the brand spanking new wing before the flight
while the right earring shows the wing melting.

It's been awhile since I updated this thing.

Anyway, here's a glimpse of something I'm working on for my Advanced Projects class taught by the infamous Lenny Long. I'd say that this class and I are currently in a love/hate relationship. I'll see how I feel about A.P. once the show is up and I have a glass of wine in my hand.

Oh yeah. I'm doing a series of three cut paper pieces.

Also, Collabustration happened.
I worked with my roommates and fellow illustrators Susanne Lamb and Laura Korzon on a collaborative project titled 'Did She?' We call it The Monster.

Each page is hand cut with an exacto knife to create depth within the layers of paper. I was toying with the idea of taking something 2-dimensional such as paper and transforming it to a 3-dimensional image.
